📍 Saffron Walden Common

The Common is a fantastic area within Saffron Walden that families will love. This expansive open space allows kids to run freely. The Common features a well-equipped playground complete with playground equipment for all ages. Play equipment includes several climbing frames (including a castle themed climbing frame with slides) and various climbs. There is spinning climbing equipment and a surface level roundabout.


The Common is a great picnic spot in Saffron Walden. Bring your own or head into the High Street less than five minutes to pick up a bite to eat or something to drink. There are plenty of independent restaurants as well as well known chains such as Costa or Waitrose. The Saffron Walden Market can also be found in town. The Saffron Walden market runs on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

A short walk away from Saffron Walden High Street (in the opposite direction of the Common) is Bridge End Gardens. Bridge End Gardens is a lovely spot for families who enjoy nature walks. The public gardens are free to enter and are very well maintained. You can find several walking paths, vibrant flower beds, and even a charming pond. Highlights include the Dutch garden and the maze. 📍Anglo American Playground

The Anglo-American Playground can be found very close to Bridge End Gardens. The park is over 50 years old, but was revamped in 2023. It is full of brightly coloured play equipment, which is in great condition.



Play equipment includes climbing frames, a climbing pyramid, zip wire, swings including a nest swing and balancing equipment. The playground is enclosed.


Nearby you will find the Fry Public Art Gallery. There are a number of paintings, prints, illustrations and designs by artists from the 20th century to today. The Gallery is run by volunteers and entry is free. The gallery reopens for the year on Sunday 6th April and will close for the season on Sunday 26th October.

(Behind the Lord Butler Leisure Centre)


For older children and teenagers, the Skate Park in Saffron Walden is a must-visit. This facility comes equipped with multiple ramps and obstacles for skateboarders, BMX riders, and rollerbladers. There are some challenging skills areas for advanced riders.There is also a mini skate park and rail area, which is great for beginners and small children.
